“We are supposed to figure out who to trust and who to avoid. Then make a list of suspects and discover alibies, determine motive and opportunity, and detect lies.” I added these items to the list.

3 – Who to trust? Who to avoid?

4 – Alibies, motive, opportunity.

5 – Determine who is lying.

“That looks good, Paige,” said Glo.

“These aren’t set in stone, you know,” said Frank. “Each book is different, and some books don’t follow that plotline. And most authors love to throw in a bunch of red herrings. Everybody listen up!” He tapped his curled paw on a chair, suddenly sounding like a small, furry general, but with a marshmallow soft fist. “We must stay loose and be willing to pivot if necessary.”

“Do you all agree that we should explore the neighborhood tomorrow?” I asked the group. “See who lives and works along the river. The people who would most be affected by the pollution.”

Everyone thought that was a good idea.

“We can also talk to some locals that way. We might get some tips,” pointed out Forrest. He’d been so quiet I nearly forgot he was in the room. But I supposed with this group it was hard to get a word in edgewise.

I could see that everyone was getting tired. It had been a very long and crazy day. “What do you think? Is this enough for today?” I asked.

There was a chorus of voices saying “Yeah.”

“If we’re done, you’re supposed to say, ‘meeting adjourned,’” said Frank.

“Since when?” said Zell, her face scrunched up.

“It makes sense. Otherwise, how will we know if the meeting is over?”

“Frankie, we know the meeting is over because Paige just said, ‘Is this enough for today?’ and everyone said yeah.”

“So, then why can’t she say, ‘meeting adjourned’?” Frank persisted.

I tapped a marker on the board. “Meeting adjourned!”
